Clinithink, Buffalo, NY., August 19, 2019: HEALTHeLINK, the long-running and innovative HIE based in Buffalo, has selected two technology partners to support a project with a focus to study comparative effectiveness of clinical natural language processing (CNLP) on unstructured medical record data against that of flexible full-text search on structured medical record data. The study, slated to be completed by March 2020, will initially use a single use case to determine whether one method outperforms the other, and if there is a way to combine the two results for the best outcome.

The use case will look though the HIE data for patients who meet the criteria for being at-risk for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) through both methods and will examine the accuracy and specificity of each. Clinithink, a supplier of artificial intelligence and CNLP solutions, was selected to scan unstructured clinical narrative for signs and symptoms of the disease. Unstructured clinical narrative consists of the patient stories recorded by physicians and nurses as notes and reports, either typed or dictated. Examples are progress notes, operative reports, discharge summaries, radiology reports, referral letters and history and physical reports. Clinithink’s ENRICH platform reads these documents at a rate of over one million per hour, and encodes all the clinical concepts within the record using post-coordinated SNOMED-CT. A second step filters the output for the targeted therapeutic area, which in this case is for the patients that meet the criteria for being at-risk for NAFLD. A key feature is to eliminate false positives, as the platform understands the difference between what pertains to the patient versus their family members, understands negation in all its forms, and understands severity levels as well as temporality.
