Press Release: HEALTHeLINK selects Clinithink and Stella Technology to support Analysis of HIE Data

Clinithink, Buffalo, NY., August 19, 2019: HEALTHeLINK, the long-running and innovative HIE based in Buffalo, has selected two technology partners to support a project with a focus to study comparative effectiveness of clinical natural language processing (CNLP) on unstructured medical record data against that of flexible full-text search on structured medical record data. The study, slated to be completed by March 2020, will initially use a single use case to determine whether one method outperforms the other, and if there is a way to combine the two results for the best outcome.

Dan Porreca, executive director of HEALTHeLINK said “Leveraging and accurately analyzing HIE data for the benefit of patients has been a consistent focus us. We are always looking for innovative ways to build on our current capabilities to help our area patients, hospitals and practices to avoid gaps in care, find and treat undiagnosed diseases, and ultimately improve quality and lower the cost of health care.”

The use case will look though the HIE data for patients who meet the criteria for being at-risk for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) through both methods and will examine the accuracy and specificity of each. Clinithink, a supplier of artificial intelligence and CNLP solutions, was selected to scan unstructured clinical narrative for signs and symptoms of the disease. Unstructured clinical narrative consists of the patient stories recorded by physicians and nurses as notes and reports, either typed or dictated. Examples are progress notes, operative reports, discharge summaries, radiology reports, referral letters and history and physical reports. Clinithink’s ENRICH platform reads these documents at a rate of over one million per hour, and encodes all the clinical concepts within the record using post-coordinated SNOMED-CT. A second step filters the output for the targeted therapeutic area, which in this case is for the patients that meet the criteria for being at-risk for NAFLD. A key feature is to eliminate false positives, as the platform understands the difference between what pertains to the patient versus their family members, understands negation in all its forms, and understands severity levels as well as temporality.

Stella Technology, a solution provider with deep expertise in clinical data and information exchange, has developed a big data platform that can quickly and efficiently find patients with conditions using multi-step search criteria across hundreds of fields and unstructured data within an electronic health record or database. The Stella Prism platform, which was designed with flexibility and scalability at its core, enables search across non-uniform health records, such as the kind gathered by an HIE from dozens of sites and source systems. Following a “no data left behind” strategy, Prism allows healthcare organizations to find key insights from their complete data set within seconds, vs. hours with traditional analytics solutions.

Lalo Valdez, CEO of Stella, says “HEALTHeLINK is a great test bed because they have been so successful in establishing a connected infrastructure that has gathered ten years of clinical reports from numerous hospitals and practices, adding up to many terabytes of rich clinical data. We very much look forward to helping find and analyze data for this study, which is exactly what Prism was designed to do.”

Glenn Keet, general manager of Clinithink added “We are grateful to Dan and his team for this opportunity, and we look forward to helping further define the state of the art of HIE analytics.”
