Sr. VP & Chief Information Officer, Catholic Health
Dr. Michael F. Galang has served as the Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer (CIO) of the Catholic Health System (CHS) since 2008. He joined CHS in 2005 as the system’s Chief Medical Information Officer. Before joining the CHS IT leadership team, Dr. Galang served as the Medical Director for Clinical Quality for a 120 physician, multi-specialty group, and as the Medical Director for a 25 physician, primary care group in Buffalo, NY. Dr. Galang is dually-board certified in Family Medicine and Clinical Informatics. He practiced for about 20 years before assuming the full-time CIO role.
Dr. Galang’s current role is to provide the vision and leadership for developing and implementing information technology (IT) initiatives in alignment with the Catholic Health Strategic and Operating Plans. He is responsible for the operations of all information systems within Catholic Health, including implementing improvements, ensuring the integrity and security of the systems, and aligning IT objectives and programs with enterprise objectives and strategies. He oversees all IT strategy, planning, contracting, development, implementation, and support for clinical/business applications, network, data security, integration, data analytics, telecommunications, and biomedical engineering within Catholic Health. He is responsible for the business development and operations of a tier 3-4 co-location data center, providing data center services to customers outside of Catholic Health. His team was successful in attesting for Meaningful Use Stage 1 in 2011-2013 and Stage 2 in 2014-2016. He also closely aligns and works with Catholic Medical Partners, a clinically integrated Independent Practice Association of approximately 1000 physicians.
Dr. Galang earned a Master in Medical Informatics from Northwestern University; a Master in Health Care Management from Harvard University; his medical degree from Midwestern University, Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine; completed his Family Medicine Residency at the Stanford University-affiliated San Jose Medical Center; and Bachelor of Arts in both Biology and Drama from the University of California, San Diego. He is also a certified healthcare CIO (CHCIO).
