Clinical Data Model Improves HIE Efficiency with Access to Consolidated, Clean, and Standardized Data
SAN JOSE, Calif. and BUFFALO, NEW YORK (Nov. 17, 2014) – HEALTHeLINK, the Western New York Clinical Information Exchange, announced today the use of Stella Technology’s clinical data access technology to support the Health Information Exchange’s (HIE) analytics and reporting initiatives.
HEALTHeLINK is an unprecedented collaboration among physician, hospital, and insurance organizations to share clinical information in efficient and meaningful ways to improve the delivery of care, enhance clinical outcomes, and control health care costs throughout the region.
The Stella Clinical Staging Database provides HEALTHeLINK with an ease-of-use solution to access and store patient, provider, clinical results and other medical/administrative information in a simplified process for provisioning data for future analysis. It also provides for a full set of usage analytics to help HEALTHeLINK manage operations. Once fully implemented, the Clinical Staging Database will provide HEALTHeLINK simplified access to 3.9 million patient administrative records, as well as 118 million clinical results.
“It’s critical for us to have secure and efficient access to data in order to perform operational functions, security audits and to partition clinical data to better support doctors and their staff enabling better treatment,” said Daniel E. Porreca, Executive Director, HEALTHeLINK. “By working with Stella Technology, we are able to streamline data available within our organization and facilitate better support for our participating providers.”
The Stella Technology Clinical Staging Database is an extensible relational store which contains a general purpose, canonical clinical data model – it can be used by a variety of applications for functions such as reporting, analytics, operations management, data extraction and system migration.
With the Clinical Staging Database, HEALTHeLINK is able to extract previously hard to access data in a much more automated, scalable fashion, and use it outside of the existing system without compromising its meaning, relationships and integrity. The Clinical Staging Database solves the issue through a set of intelligent extraction routines, a standard clinical data model and open interfaces to subsequently feed the data into HEALTHeLINK’s analytics platform for quality improvement measures.
“The Clinical Staging Database leverages the Stella team’s 17+ years experience in exchanging, collecting and consolidating quality clinical data from a variety of sources, and is a critical component of our complete set of interoperability products and services,” said Lalo A. Valdez, President and CEO, Stella Technology. “Open and free access to rich clinical data in a consolidated, clean, and standardized format remains an elusive goal for many HIEs, health systems and payers. We look forward to working with HEALTHeLINK to meet their organization’s needs and ultimately providing a higher quality of service, care and improved clinical outcomes to their stakeholders, participants and patients.”
HEALTHeLINK, the Western New York Clinical Information Exchange, is a collaboration among the region’s hospitals, physicians, health plans and other health care providers to serve the eight counties of western New York State. HEALTHeLINK was created to enable the exchange of clinical information in secure and meaningful ways to improve both efficiency and quality, while also helping to control health care costs. Patients who provide consent allow physicians and providers directly involved in their treatment to securely access relevant medical information via HEALTHeLINK, resulting in more timely and effective treatment at the point of care.
HEALTHeLINK is part of the Statewide Health Information Network of New York (SHIN-NY), a technology framework spanning the entire state that allows health care providers efficient access to their patients’ data. HEALTHeLINK has been recognized for its work in building a regional health information technology infrastructure and for testing innovative approaches by both state and federal agencies, including being named a Beacon Community, an effort funded by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology.
